This loop is located in the Vergennes, Vermont area. Total length: 13.3 miles, Time: approx. 1 hr. (Depending on your physical condition and abilities), All paved roads.
The route begins in downtown Vergennes at the stoplight
(0.0 mi.). Follow Green St. southeast to the blinking light
(0.2 mi.).
Continuing straight ahead Green St. goes through a dip, then begins a gradual climb for about .5 miles, then steeply climbs a hill. As you ascend the hill views of the Adirondacks and Champlain Valley come into view. Once at the top
(1.4 mi.)
it's a relaxing ride through wooded areas and open fields. The ride takes you past a swampy area with a beaver dam
(2.0 mi.), near dusk it's a noisy place with frogs croaking and peeping. The first paved intersection we reach is Route 17
(4.3 mi.).
Turn right here and head Southwest approximately 2.5 miles.
Route 17 is a narrow state highway with little or no shoulders, paving is poor in places, with potholes and broken areas. Extreme caution should be used on this section of road.
In a short distance, there is a long winding downhill (I like to use the Green St. to Maple St. direction for this reason), it reduces the amount of time spent on this highway. During this part of the ride you will pass farmlands and Addison County Fairgrounds (6.4 mi.). Be very cautious in the first weeks of August when the fair is open. Traffic is heavy!. Just before crossing the Otter Creek is Hallock Rd (7.2 mi.). There is a blinking light.
Turn right and head Northwest, Hallock Road turns into Maple Street. My favorite stop is the Sunset View Cemetery
(9.7 mi.), where you'll find a panoramic view of the Addison County farmlands, Otter Creek and Adirondack Mountains. The traffic is usually light on this road, follow it back to Vergennes.
At School St.
(13.1 mi.)
turn right.
Turn left at Green St.
(13.2 mi.)
and pedal to the stoplight
(13.3 mi.)
This is a beautiful challenging country ride over rolling hills. I use it for a regular workout routine. I have seen deer and turkey. Often, there are horse shows at the Addison Fairgrounds. Stop in and check it out.
