This loop is located in the Vergennes, Vermont area.
Total length: 27.22 miles, Time: approx. 3 hr. (Depending on your physical
condition and abilities), All paved roads.
The route begins in downtown Vergennes at the stoplight.
Follow Rte 22A. southwest across bridge over Otter Creek.
Take a right on Canal St.
Bear to the left on West St. as you round the first corner(If you take a slight-right to the boat launch you can check out the
the waterfalls). After a gradual grade you reach the intersection of West St. and Panton Road.
Turn right and head west towards Panton (4.2 mi.).
In Panton turn left on Jersey St. and head south for a short distance.
Turn west, up a hill, on Pease Road. Pease Road connects to Lake Street. Bear to the Left on Lake St and head south, views of Lake Champlain will be on your right. Lake St. turns into Lake Road. Stay on this route until you reach Rte. 17. A favorite ice cream stand "Goodies" is located here and a
store.
Turn left and head East towards Addison, Vt. Route 17 is a narrow state highway with little or no shoulders, paving is poor in places, with potholes and broken
areas. Extreme caution should be used on this section of
road. You will be pedalling through the Dead Creek Wilderness
Area where you can find places to rest, picnic or watch for birds, Bald Eagles
and Snow Geese are common sites here.
Once in Addison, you have a choice. You can either
follow my mapped course or return on 22A north back to Vergennes.
Route 22A is a popular truck route and a main artery for
traffic on the West side of Vermont. Extreme caution should be used on this
section of road. There is also a General Store here for snacks and
beverages.
Continuing across Rte. 22A follow Rte. 17 east until your cross the Otter Creek. Be very cautious in the first weeks of August when the Addison County fair is open. Traffic is heavy!
Just after crossing the Otter Creek is Hallock Rd. Turn left
and head Northwest, Hallock Road turns into Maple Street. My favorite stop is
the Sunset View Cemetery, where you'll find a panoramic view of the Addison
County farmlands, Otter Creek and Adirondack Mountains. The
traffic is usually light on this road, follow it back to Vergennes.
